Tower Hall Theatre

The Tower Hall Theatre at Panchikawaththa Road in ,Maradana ,Colombo 10.stands from its inception in December ,1911to date with a serene grandeur as a monumental treasure of the Sri Lankan art lovers .the Tower Clock at the façade epitomizes the glory that abounds aloft this foremost theatre hall. it has survived through decades of social and cultural torments and turmoil amidst which it stood up right to face with the drastic transition that took place with the advent of European Culture.

 

The whole premises was resurrected with a comprehensive refurbishment Programme but retaining the historical aspects in situ ,costing foundational coffers a pretty thirty two 32 Million rupees. It was ceremonially re-opened on August 16th 2000.with this renaissance, capacity has now been increased to 856 seats.

 

Tower Hall houses the Drama School calling to the education drama and Theatre. dance and music class too are conducted as the tower hall.

 

The management now provides the following to audiences as well as visitors

1 The restaurant provides refreshments savories and beverages and meals of a Quality standard .
2.Well maintained museum affords the rare opportunity to get a glimpse of the costumes worn by the performing Artistes of the Tower Hall Era, copies of ancient Dramas and their manuscripts;

4 Availability of the liftable miniature stage used during the Tower Hall Era.
5.Marking Available the Tower Hall ,the Elphinstone Hall and the Rukmani Devi center (Negambo) to stage Dramas , Musical shows etc on hire.

Elphinstone Theatre

The Elphinstone Theatre situated at Maradana Colombo 10 has been inaugurated in 1925 and hence the Second oldest Theatre Hall in Sri Lanka .it has recently been refurbished at a colossal cost to provide better amenities and service for enthusiasts. Elphinstone has seating capacity of 913in an air conditional atmosphere .Also the theatre has facilities for film shows as well.
This too has a separate cafeteria providing snack and beverages.

Rukmani Devi Centre has been inaugurated in October ,1980 in memory of late Rukmani Devi popularly acclaimed as the also as a gesture of acknowledgement of the request of her native community this Centre was built 40 k.m. away from Colombo -at her place of birth Negambo.

 

Christians of this area have nurtured and nourished 'pasku' Dramas for generations .Hence , special pasku programmers ,pasku workshop s, etc. are being organized at this centre. commemorative ceremonies are held annually restructuring the memoirs of the late sing stress and the actress who contributed immensely to the performing Arts and is an inspiration to the present generation of performers. in the commemorative museum are preserved the various costumes ,and ornaments worn by her and selected photographers of her roles in the films she acted. special arrangements have been made in a well equipped studio to listen to songs sung by her which still linger in our memories.

 

Training classes for music and dance are conducted daily at weekends by competent teachers. The centre under the patronage of THTF grants 50 student ships for music and drama annually.

 

Rukmani Devi Centre provides seating accommodation for 500 personnel and it could be reserved for staging dramas concerts, Exhibition and even for wedding function at reasonable charges .

Lionel Edirisinghe Centre for performing Arts (LECPA)

This performing Arts centre has been inaugurated in memory of the late veteran Musician Lionel Edirisinghe and is housed at 'Sausiripaya' Maradana .There are approximately 3000 students both males and females learning dance drama and music under distinguished teachers ,on week days and week ends . the Lionel Edirisinghe centre is the authorized Examination centre in Sri Lanka to hold exams of the Bathkandaya vidyapieth Luknow ,India. there is a rehearsals Hall and five training halls within the confines of this performing arts centre. Musical Instruments are provided free of charge to the students. also for the convenience of the public and student, a sales point for musical instruments, books and stationary is available this center.

President Welfare Fund for Performing Artists

Fulfilling a pledge given by her Excellency the president ,madam Chandrika Bandaranayaka Kumaranathunga the establishment of the president's welfare Fund for performing Arts commenced ceremonially with an initial grant by her Excellency in a sum of Rs.20 million from the president's fund, in 1996 followed with another grant of Rs.10 million in 1998 the fund is established to extend financial assistance to performing artists selected in accordance with a strict criteria.

This fund is administrated by a management committee comprising of members appointed by her Excellency the president.

1. Presently a monthly financial grant of 2000/=in cash is paid to each of 120 performing artist s who are so selected Another 16 who are selected will start receiving this grant from next month.

2. A death donation of Rs.5000/= is given to the custodians of those performing Artists who pass away while receiving the above

3. The performing Artistes who require such financial assistance are kindly requested to address their communication to the office of the president's welfare fund located at the

The Theatre service Bureau

The opening of the Theatre service bureau at the Tower hall Theatre complex for the benefit of the Sri Lanka Dramatists was yet another new project accomplished satisfactorily by the THTF.

The Establishments of a Theatre service bureau, fulfilled a long felt need of a Documentation center disseminating information required by the theatre Artistes .

 

The objective of the ' Theatre service bureau'

01. Storage and disseminating of data pertaining to Sri Lankan Dramatists /Artistes,
02. Collection and supply of particulars pertaining to Theatres island wide,
03. Sale of make up materials both locally manufactured and imported at a reasonable price.
04. Sale of books on Drama and Theatre,
05. Provide services and guidance in the creation of items and instruments used for theatrical productions,
06. Hire costumes to Dramatists at a reasonable fee.

Kalapura Housing Scheme at Attidiya-Mount Lavinia

As the name 'kalapura ' signifies it is an assemblage of dwellings of the eminent Dramatists of national recognition and of others confirming to requirement for suitability , inaugurated at a property possessed by the Tower Hall Theatre foundation .This Scheme ,came up with fifty allotments of land ,and most recipients have built their houses in respective allotments yet others who await further improvements to their existing abodes are being provided with facilities to obtain loans, and these properties will pass on to one of their children thereafter .the Architects of this venture have envisaged as objectives-a congregation of the resident Artists to participate in a constant dialogue and also to engage in experimentations on the "modus operndi" for the enlistment and expansion of our cultural sphere.

A post office with substantial facilities is opened for the benefit and the residents and kala pura as well as for the area.

The Tower Hall Drama and Dance School

This school was commenced to draw more attention among groups of youngsters towards the Arts of drama , Dance and Music. The institution is affiliated to the Tower Hall Theatre .The course of training are scheduled to commence with the enrolment of about 50 students , annually. this training course has been specially design for school levelers who have completed their secondary education and have an actual interest in the fields of Art. The course of study leads to a Diploma applications are called by advertisements published mid yearly in popular papers. A hand book /Manual containing the information for the one year Diploma course is available at the institute.

Tower Hall Theatre Foundation Rehearsal Hall

The above Rehearsal Hall located at the ground floor of the Tower Hall Theatre foundation at 'Sausiripaya' 123,wijerama mawawtha ,Colombo 07.has specially been designed for the benefit of school children .A mini stage herein provides comfortable space for them to get trained in dancing by leading teachers. training classes in dance are conducted at week ends. the hall is open to other amateurs as well ,on hire.

Tower Hall Artiste's Welfare Scheme

Under the above scheme ,the monthly cash grant which was Rs 500.00 was increased to Rs. 1000.00 with effect from 01.01.2001 on the directive of the Hon Prime minister who incidentally is the chairperson of the Board presently 53 Tower Hall Era Artistes are benefited by this.

This scheme has been strengthened further to revise their health condition by subjecting them to a medical check - up at the clinic regularly held at the Tower Theatre, Maradana, with the kind participation and cooperation of the Health Department and the Doctors in attendance on a good Samaritan basis. The responsive attendance of the Artistes on invitation clearly depicts not only the success of the Scheme but also of the fulfillment of a lapse that has existed for a long time.

Tower Hall Sound Studio

The well equipped sound studio at the Head Office of the Tower Hall Theatre Foundation is one amongst the best in Sri Lanka. Dubbing of films will be undertaken of the sound studio in the sound Studio in the near future .

Tower Hall Studio

Situated at Thalawathugoda in a Straw ling for I land in equipment with sounds , screen, stage etc to conduct dramas and film shows.

The drama school imparting theoretical and practical knowledge in drama and theatre is the main function at this institution. after very strict screening so students and enrolled to this course diplomas studies annually leading to higher national diploma.
