Overview |
|
The Sinhala
Cinema was inaugurated with the release of the Sinhala Film 'Kadawunu
Poronduwa' at Kingsley Cinema - Colombo on 21.01.1947.
During the period 1947 to 1971 film production, distribution, operation of
theatres & studios were handled by the Private Companies exercise and their
domination over all branches of the film industry.
The National Film Corporation of Sri Lanka was established in 1972 as per
State Film Corporation Act. No.47 of 1971 and amended Act No.45 of 1980 as a
controlling body to distribute films on a planned programmes and a sound
management of the National Film Industry.
The main responsibilities of the NFC are to take measures to develop the Sri
Lankan Film Industry.
The Chairman who is the Chief Executive Officer of the NFC along with the
Board of Directors and the General Manager would be the decision-makers.
The distribution of films was decentralized in 1999 and all the theatres
were allocated to the following Distribution Boards in 2001. |

Written Authority of the Chairman has to be obtained prior to importing
films into Sri Lanka.
A sum of Rs.6.00 (levy) is being imposed by NFC on each cinema ticket
for any film screened in Sri Lanka which would be shared by NFC,
exhibitor & Local Film Producer.
The National Film Corporation grants loan facilities to the film
industry as follows;
