Construction of National Performing Art Theatre

Expected Project Output:-

Construction of a proposed building for art theatre.

Objectives :-

The artistes will get an accomplished Art Centre to develop their talents and present their performances. Creation of eminent artistes as they will get an opportunity for training facilities of high quality. To create leadership with broad understanding of the need of "Unity and diversity" and thereby respecting the Cultural Heritage of each ethnic social and religious group. 

Description of the Project  :-

The main objective of the project is to provide international level infrastructure facilities with sophisticated modern hi tech facilities for professional and armature artists, researchers, foreign troops and general public to perform, train, and engage in research etc. through construction of a building with 14,000 square meters floor area for Performing Art Theater at Nomads Grounds, Colombo 7. This project will meet the need of the nation and promote excellence in the performing art field. This Theater will serve the performing artists and audiences of the country by inspiring and supporting the creation, translation and presentation of the best performances of national and international repertoire. the structure of this building is similar to the Lotus Pond in the Polonnaruwa. The total estimated cost of the project is Rs.3080 million. Chinese Government will provide Rs.2430mn. and the rest will be provided by the Sri Lankan Government from the Consolidated Funds.

 

Basic facilities such as concrete mixing station, two storied temporary building, container unloading platform, electricity, water supply and soil testing were completed and construction of building already started .

Progress:-

The construction work has been started in May 2006 and up to now soil investigation has completed. Completed the digging and the pilling of the land and the foundation. Provide infrastructure facilities such as water, electricity, accommodation and telephone for Chinese engineers and the all labors and officers. Completed the reinforcement of slab up to 20ft from ground floor level. 163 containers with raw materials were received from China for construction work. Up to now more than 55% of the entire constructions was completed. The allocation for 2009 is Rs.750 Mn and cumulative expenditure as at end of year of 2009 is Rs.959.28 Mn.
