Introduction                     :- Capital city of the Sri Lanka does not have a single theater complex which could answer to modern needs of performing groups from out side world. unavailability of a Modern theatre complex has hampered the development of Performing Arts in the country to suit the modern era, requirements; thereby inhibiting the blossoming of the full potential of the local talent.

          The Centre will be a central focus that will support and foster forms of drama, Ballet, opera, orchestra and chamber music, film video projection and other performances. This complex will include main Theatre for 1500 persons, mini theatre cinema hall for 350 persons open air theater Arts and cultural action, a Library and studios for practice of arts, music and painting.

Purpose of Project            :- Promotion and Development of arts and opening awareness to the global cultural scenario.

Expected Project Output    :-

  • The artistes will get an accomplished Art Centre to develop their talents and present their performance.

  • Creation of eminent artistes as they will get a opportunity for training facilities of High quality.

  • Supply of equipment's provided on modern technology.

  • To create leadership with broad understanding of the need of "Unity and diversity" and thereby respecting the Cultural Heritage of each ethnic social and religious group.            

Progress as to date            :-  All the information/reports/data required from the Sri Lankan side in terms of the design agreement signed on 30th August 2005 have been handed over to the Chinese Embassy in Sri Lanka to send to Beijing Institute of Architectural Designs for the preparation of architectural and structural designs. Once the preliminary design is ready they are supposed to submit that design to get the approval from the Government of Sri Lanka.

            In the mean time this Ministry has invited Chinese technical team to visit Sri Lanka to sort out all the outstanding matters to commence the project without any delay.
