State Literacy Award Ceremony

The Department of Cultural Affairs hold the State Literacy Award Ceremony in outstations with the prime objective of enlightening the present day students and teachers regarding the literature from the Anuradhapura era to this day and the expansion of indigenous dancing and the propagation of literature in remote areas, enhancement of reading interest of rural folk of literature island-wide.

 

State Literacy Award Ceremony is held annually in view of awakening and revival in a selected district for three days on line with the literary month of every year. For this festival, professors and other academics will actively participate by holding lectures, discussions and workshops to impart knowledge to school children with children's arts, workshops, oral debates, do you know contests, along with programmes of asking questions related to these subjects. Further measures are taken by many departments to hold programmes to make aware the general public in this regard.

 

Apart from that, many entertainments such as dramas which won state awards, films, out-door shows puppetry, dramas played by actors in fantastic appearance, sokari, cultural shows presented by the students of schools and art institutes dance shows presented by the State dance Ensemble and shows of Gramophone songs and drama songs will be held for the development of cultural inspiration of the rural folk.

 

Each school and library in the area will be donated with books to the value of Rs. 10,000 /= and more by the Department of Cultural affairs.

Monetary Assistance to Needy Artistes

The Department of Cultural Affairs grants an annual payment of Rs. 2,500 /= to need artistes who are over 55 years of age and have rendered a yeoman service to the field of art by involving in various aspects of art such as dance, puppetry, painting and dramatic performances and whose monthly income is less than Rs. 750/=.

This payment is extended only to artistes who have the recommendation of the Grama Niladari of the village, residing in and whose eligibility is certified by the Divisional Secretary concerned on the recommendation of Cultural Officers of respective Divisional Secretariats.

Kalabhushana Honors Awarding Ceremony

The Department of Cultural Affairs awards Kalabhushana honors to Sinhala, Tamil and Muslim artistes, exponents in the aspects of art who rendered an invaluable and persistent service to their village, province and country for a long time.

 

This event follows the department's wish for the mental satisfaction and longevity of elderly artistes, neglected and marginalized, over fifty years of age and who have rendered a yeoman service in the field of art and to encourage them by appreciating their skills and service.

 

Certain streams of traditional art in the country which had not been appreciated got the opportunity to exhibit its skills at the Kalabhushana ceremony bringing forth such hidden arts for the due appreciation.

 

Accordingly honors were awarded covering all the aspects of arts and crafts such as offering to demons, devil-dances performed in offering to demons with a view to cure a person who is under the spell of demons, the art of decorating with tender leaves of coconut tree, lac-work, dance puppetry, recitals of musical instruments, dramas played by a group of actors in fantastic appearance, impromptu poetries and baila in debate form. These events are performed in the night for the convenience and appreciation of the general public.

 

A fixed deposit of Rs. 10,000/= along with a silver medal and an award certificate will be offered to each recipient. Artistes to be honored are selected on the recommendation of the Divisional Secretary and the selection is  made to represent all the districts of the island by a special Panel of Judges.
